Michel Bréal, inventor of the marathon event at the Olympic Games
The presence of a “Bréal cup”, at the exhibition which opened at the Louvre for the Paris Olympic Games, reminds us that it was the eminent linguist Michel Bréal (1832-1915), professor at the Collège de France, member of the Institute, who suggested to Coubertin, in 1894, the idea of including a marathon event in the Olympic Games. An opportunity to discuss the career of Michel Bréal, his family environment and his alliances, which, just like his intellectual commitments, place him at the crossroads of French and German cultures.

Isaïe Schwartz, music composer (Strasbourg 1833 - Saint Mandé 1902)
Isaïe Schwartz, descendant of Westhoffen peddlers, was a cantor in Strasbourg then a singing master in Mulhouse. Talented, he devoted the first half of his life to religious music and the transmission of the Judeo-Alsatian tradition. After the Prussian victory, he continued in Paris with the exiles whose faith, nostalgia and spirit of revenge he shared. He integrated perfectly and lived with his times, composing for the sacred and the profane with great freedom of expression, embracing the political struggles of his time and transmitting the quest for excellence to his children.
