The REGIE database: description
The REGIE database (French: Renseignement pour la Généalogie — information for genealogy) brings together all the records and photographs made by members of our Cercle in various archive repositories, in France and abroad. Notable among them are the Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at La Courneuve and Nantes, the civil registration records of the City of Paris, the archives of the Alliance Israélite Universelle, as well as those of the Holocaust Museum in Washington (origin of the microfilms of the originals of the OFFICIAL registers of the Jewish Community of Salonika, transliterated by Izo Abram and now consultable on our website — see also the work undertaken), etc.
Contents of REGIE
As of November 11, 2026, REGIE contains more than 300,000 records and nearly 4,500 reproductions of documents.
Ongoing work on the Salonika records — to learn more, consult our information page.
Access to the REGIE database is reserved for members with up-to-date membership dues: become a member to explore all these archives.
⚖ Terms of Use — to know the conditions of use of REGIE, consult our Terms of Use. Respecting them conditions the continuation of this service: any automated extraction of the data (scraping, scripts, programmed queries) is strictly forbidden, as is any redistribution of the records without authorization from the Cercle.
How to use it
Note: the search form itself is in French; the field names below are given with their French labels.
The records of REGIE all consist of seven main fields: NOM (name), PRÉNOM (given name), ANNÉE (year), INFORMATIONS (information), DÉTAIL DE LA FICHE (record details), SÉRIE (series) and TYPE; ILLUSTRATIONS (illustrations) may also be attached to these records.
Access to the records of the database is made through a search form that selects the records containing, in the various fields, the specified character strings, separated by spaces. This form includes several search fields:
"Nom" and "Prénom" allow searching for all the records having the specified character strings in the Name or Given name fields. Note that several character strings can be specified. This is particularly useful for marriage records, where the names are "Groom's name and Bride's name" and "Groom's given name and Bride's given name".
"Entre l'année... Et..." (From year... To...) allows a search specifying a range of years.
"Recherche dans tous les champs" (Search in all fields) allows searching for one or more character strings appearing in any of the six fields mentioned above.
"Série" (Series) allows, through a drop-down menu, choosing the records appearing in a given series. If no value is chosen, the search will be made through all the series in the database.
"TYPE": Births, Marriages, Deaths, Directories, AIU archives, Diplomatic archives, Circumcisions, 1808 name-taking records, Censuses, Burials...
For example, if one enters Cohen Eliaou Rabbin in the "search in all fields" box, one obtains 35 results, coming from 4 different record sets. Note that the search works on character strings: thus, a search on the string "Lev" will select all the "Levy", "Levi", "Halevy", etc.
When two or more character strings have been specified in the same query, REGIE applies the AND operator between the strings submitted to it. It is thus possible to reduce the number of results by adding character strings.
Searches can also specify a range of years; the search will then be limited to results falling between the specified years. Note that some records do not contain the "Year" information: a search within a given range of years will not select these records.
Finally, the search can be made across all the record sets (this is the general case), or limited to one particular record set.
The results of the queries are displayed in alphabetical order of NAMES and GIVEN NAMES; the other major information is included in this display. However, the record details are only visible by displaying the complete record, by clicking on its blue number on the left. The number of lines appearing with each query is limited to 100: if the query returns more than 100 results, only the first 100 are displayed, and it is then advisable to add search criteria (for example an additional character string) to limit the number of results.
The Information section varies greatly depending on the origin of the documents analyzed (the record set, therefore); it generally summarizes the content of the document in 3 lines. To obtain the detailed record (the document's analysis text), click on the blue number in the left-hand column.
When the results are displayed, one or more thumbnails may appear to the left of a record's description: this means that illustrations are associated with this record (1). Simply click on a thumbnail to display the record with its associated documents.
It may happen, given the age and condition of the documents presented, that it is necessary to use the zoom to improve the readability (2) of an illustration.
(1) The thumbnails indicate the format of the illustration. The PDF thumbnail corresponds to an illustration in this format; the PDF contains, except in rare cases, several views. A JPG thumbnail means that there is a single document in JPG format; two JPG thumbnails mean that there are at least two documents in JPG format; thus, one of the records present in REGIE is associated with 99 JPG documents.
(2) The way the zoom works depends on the browser used to access REGIE; from the zoom point of view, Mozilla's Firefox is, among the common browsers, the one that gives the most convenience; Google's Chrome is practically equivalent.
A few shortcomings
Despite all the care taken in the record-making and the building of REGIE, a few errors or defects may remain. Please be kind enough to report them to us.
For any question concerning the REGIE database, as well as for corrections to be made, send us a message via the form.
