Cahen Family Lorraine 1600s

Dear All

I am researching my ancestor Jacob Cahen who lived in Lechenich, Germany in the 1600s. According to a family story his ancestors were from Lorraine. According to the story, two brothers came to Lechenich in 1608 from Lorraine, their names were Bernard and Isaac Cahen. The only remaining grave in the Lechenich Jewish cemetery belongs to Jacob son of Baruch, it dates from 1690.

According to the Pascal Faustini records from Metz; there was a family there in early 1600s including a Rabbi Simon, the son of Joseph Jacob Ha-Cohen and Mindel Levy. Rabbi Simon died in 1713 and was "old".

One other interesting fact, is that the mother of Mayer Amschel Rothschild was named Schoene daughter of Meir ben Jacob HaCohen of Lechenich (this from the Frankfurt Ele Toldot); since there was only one Cahen family in Lechenich at this time, it seems possible this is the same Jacob Cahen I'm descended from. In addition the Rothschild family also appears in the records translated by Pascal Faustini.

Do you know anything about this family or other Cahen families in Lorraine who might be related to my Lechenich Cahen family. Or do you know of any resources which might help me to research this.

Cahen Lechinich - Lorraine Update

Dear All

Following my query above, I have been able to contact the compilor of the Cahen d'Ennery family book, who worked on this with Pascal Faustini; unfortunately it does not go back prior to 1791. In addition I have read the article on Ella Cahen in the Journal 118, an update on the article in Journal 75.

Can anyone recommend further resources which might include family lists for other towns and villages in Lorraine in the 1600s, or specific resources related to Cahen family research.

Thanks

Ben

Cahen family
