My family is descended from the May family in Metz, Lorraine. I am interested in finding the derivation & history of the name, May. Was it a place? Was it shortened version of some other name? It is very common name in both Alsace & Lorraine. I would be grateful for any information on it origins. Thank you.

I quote what Pascal Faustini writes in his book p.406 :
Does the name MAY derive from the given name Mayer ? We don't think so.
Several members of this family end their signature by "Maye" or even "Mayen" (see the signatures reproduced in the second part of this book)

An hypothesis says that this name comes from the city of Mayen, west of Coblence, where it is known that there were Jews in the Middle-Age. Let us also note that a family May (or Drach) lives in Frankfurt since about 1516, coming from Bacharach on the Rhine.
