Toba Adler, mère juive de Roger Vandenberghe ("Le tigre noir")
Bonjour tout le monde,
I hope you'll excuse me writing in English, but my French has become somewhat rusty over the years (I understand it fine, though).
I have been researching my family, and as part of my research, I came across famous French soldier Roger Vandenberghe (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Vandenberghe).
I discovered that his father was Emile Raoul Vandenberghe (born in Le Havre). On Raoul's Le Havre birth certificate, it states his three marriages in the margin, the last one two Toba Adler on 29 October '38. Toba Adler is the mother of Roger Vandenberghe and Albert Vandenberghe (born Roger and Albert Adler, see the first link below to the Paris archives). I went looking in the Paris archives and did indeed find this marriage record (Paris, 3e arrondissement).
In the marriage record (see the second link below to the Paris archives), it states that Toba Adler was born in Galatz, Romania on 10 March 1897. It also mentions her father's name as Simon Adler and her mother's name as Sprintatdler (not a spelling mistake on my part, it is typed like that as one word in the record). The record also makes mention of a witness called André Adler (possibly her brother). Toba's address is given as 3 Passage de la Réunion and her mother and André's joint address is given as 10 rue Ferdinand Flocon. The record also gives Toba's occupation: imprimeur, as well as André's occupation: comptable.
In books written about Roger Vandenberghe, his Jewish mother is often cited as being from Spain, but this may be a confusion between her Romanian-Galician origins and Spanish Galicia.
I've tried looking around online for other traces of the Adler family, but have not been successful so far and thus I turn to you to see if you know of anywhere to look for Toba, André, Simon and Sprint(a)(?). Toba died in the Holocaust, but the records I've found seem to be a bit unreliable on where she was taken, one source saying "La mère, raflée à Paris en 1943, disparaît en
déportation." (http://unacitaistres.n.u.f.unblog.fr/files/2015/01/vandenberghe.pdf) However, that source also gives his mother's name as "Gisèle", which seems weird.
