We have begun to conduct a survey of the deportation of people who lived in the region of Constantine. We are trying to remember the deported men, women and children of nine cities and small towns of the department; Guelma, Jemmapes, Khenchela, La Calle, Lafayette, Le Tarf, Mac-Mahon, Oued Zenati and Philippeville.

History and Memory of Fortunée Abignoli
This article tells the story of the author’s great-grandmother, Fortunée Abignoli. She was born in Cairo in 1890, arrested in a roundup in Marseille in 1943 and confined in Compiègne and Drancy. Deported in convoy #42 she was killed in Sobibor in March. The paper questions too the family memory of Fortunée’s descendants. After the war Fortunée’s fate still casts a heavy shadow upon her children, grandchildren, and even perhaps great-grandchildren. This story makes it obvious that the effect of the Holocaust lasts long after the war.

Victor Fribourg, a veteran of the Napoleonic wars emigrated to New York with his family in 1847. He engendered numerous offspring who scattered in many states of the United States and even in Peru. This article discusses in detail this offspring and shows that Victor’s memory lasts until today.

Menahem’s seal with the tree of life and a couple of birds, the Ezobi family in the South of France
Deciphering Menahem Ezobi’s name on his medieval seal matrix lead us to look for members of this family native of the city of Orange (Vaucluse) in the 13th century. Three of them, father and sons, were known as Hebrew poets. The article deals with a few characters bearing this rare name in Carpentras, Béziers, Carcassonne, Perpignan, Toulouse, all the way to Spain, Italy, Bulgaria and Turkey.
