Jews of Constantine (Algeria) at the beginning of the French presence (1837)

Philippe DANAN

The French army took Constantine (Algeria) in 1837 and found there a Jewish community of 3,000 people. This francophile and orthodox community was guided by algerian-born rabbis who tried to resist assimilation regarding especially civil status registration (birth, marriage, death). The rabbis negotiated step by step with the French authorities to obtain the following compromises : secular marriage banns will be sticked in the synagogue; the municipal magistrate should check the conformity of the marriage with the mosaic law; the rabbi and the head of the Jewish Nation should attend the secular marriage and sign the contract. These facilities seem not to have been extended to other cities in Algeria.

Death certificates of people deported from France during the Shoah

Eve Line BLUM has already approached the subject of missing death certificates regarding deported people from France (Jewish and not Jewish). However, the situation has not improved. According to the French Civil Code people without such a certificate cannot be considered as being dead.
