Instructions to search the whole website
The search form allows you to search all pages containing
certain words on the website of the Cercle de Généalogie Juive.
It is not a search engine for the whole Web.
Do not forget that you have two other tools at your disposal:
- The catalog of our Library. To find it click
here . Instructions for use are given here
- A software to search in the questions and answers.
Click on "Consult questions and answers" and afterwards on "Explanations"
How to proceed to search in the website.
- In the box "Find", enter the word
or the words you would like to find. Capital and lower case letters are equivalents.
Accents are not taken into account. A few non significant words (articles,
conjunctions) and ponctuation are not taken into account either..
- If you entered several words, choose one of the three following options :
- Find this exact phrase .
The pages found are those containing the expression you entered, exactly
as it iwas entered.
Example : if you enter "Alsace Lorraine", you'll find pages with
"l'Alsace et la Lorraine" or "Alsace and Lorraine" but
not those with "Jewish marriages in Alsace", nor "Metz and Lorraine".
- Find all words : will give
you all pages containing all the words you have entered, but not necessarily
following each other and not even necessarily in the same order.
Example : "Sarrelouis Ennery" give all pages in which Sarrelouis
is quoted somewhere and Ennery somewhere else, (7 findings altogether).
- Find one word : gives all
pages mentioning at least one of the words you entered.
Example : "Sarrelouis Ennery" yieds all pages dealing with Sarrelouis
as well as those dealing with Ennery, ( 39 findings altogether).
These three options have obviously no effect if you enter a single word only.
- If you check "Whole words only" you
need to enter each word exactly as you wish it to appear in the pages found.
If you do not check it, you may enter just a part of the word.
Example : If you choose "Whole words only", you'll find 19
answers for COBLENCE, 13 for COBLENTZ, 3 for COBLENZ et 2 for KOBLENZ. If
you do not check it and enter OBLEN, you obtain 25 answers including
all the previous ones.
A suggestion : enter words in the singular form, and do not
check "Whole words only". In this way, you shall find words in the
singular as well as in the plural forms.
- Click on "GO".
- After a short while, results are posted. The number of pages found is given,
followed by the titles of these pages. Each title is a link and a click on
it opens the corresponding page. Certain lines are labelled "for
members only". A password will be required to access those pages.
Below the list a new research form is posted, to enable you to make a new
search with other words or other options.
- Since the present site is bilingual, don't be surprised to find quite often
the same piece of information twice. Nevertheless, be aware that the French
page may be more detailed that the English one.
- If no page has been found, it might be because the type of information
you are looking for does not exist in the present Website but it may also
be due to a search which was too accurate. Suggestions posted then may help
you.
- If more than 50 pages are found which correspond
to your request, these pages are not posted. It is then suggested
to try again with a more specific search.
