RESEARCH IN JEWISH CEMETERIES IN FRANCE

Jewish cemeteries are an important source of genealogical data. Therefore our members are strongly encouraged to list gravestones and to publish the lists in printed as well as in electronic form.

We strive to inform you as best as possible on what is being done on this subject. Remember that the index of the journal of CGJ contains a section of cemeteries, like the  Members's Corner  contains some list of buried.

Our library has records of Gilles PLAUT about the Jewish graves of Horburg-Wihr and Orbey and (68) (with indexes, rating B240) and Colmar (68) (B307).

The cemetery of ROSENWILLER

At 25 km SW of Strasbourg, the Rosenwiller Jewish Cemetery, founded in the later 14th century, contains graves of Jews from several villages in Lower-Alsace, which had no cemeteries of their own (see the list of these villages) qui n’avaient pas de cimetière propre. The officers of the Jewish nation in Alsace, Moyse Blien and Aaron Meyer from Mutzig, Jacob Baruch Weyl from Obernai, Lehmann Netter from Rosheim, Cerf Beer from Medelsheim for instance are buried there as well as many other important personalities. The late Robert WEYL has published (Strasbourg 1988) the pictures and inscriptions of some 50 graves in his book Le Cimetière Juif de Rosenwiller (L005 in our Library).

The Cercle de Genealogie Juive was eager to contribute to keeping the memory of this place where a large part of the Jewish History in Alsace is recorded.

The burial register of the cemetery, beginning with the year 1753, contains the records of some 5588 tombs. The CGJ has concluded an agreement with the Strasbourg Jewish Consistory in order to secure in common the transcription and publication of this register. This register tops the collection of research tools in Alsatian genealogy already made available to the public by our Society.

This book was published in 2004 by the CGJ.

Please note that a lecture about this cemetery was given on November 4, 2002 by A. MALTHETE who is in charge of this work (see Cassettes). In Issue # 83 of our Journal, Georges HALBRONN discusses the present status of the work and shows a few pictures of gravestones.

A new step has just been passed. With help of the Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Shoah, a Memorial book of this cemetery has been produced. It contains photographs of the 377 tombstones subsisting from 1656 to 1808, the transcription and translation into French of all epitaphs and genealogical informations about the deceased individual. This publication is now available in publications.

 The cemetery in HEGENHEIM

The records of the gravestones in Hegenheim, awaited for two or three years, has just been published. It is a superb work : 144 pages, list of names, death dates, position and pictures of the graves, color map of the cemetery, and a cederom. It can be obtained from Mrs Léa ROGG - 9 rue des Coteaux, 68220 Hégenheim, France.

 The cemetery in BRUMATH

Our friend Jean-Pierre Kleitz sent us records of people buried in  the cemetery in Brumath (67), performed with Ruben Honigmann.

It is in the Members' Corner.

 LORRAINE

Books published by the CGJ :

 The cemeteries in Moselle

Price :74 Euros plus postage dues.

See details in publications.

The reginal cemetery in LUNÉVILLE (1759-1998),

by Sylvain and Françoise JOB, Claude FREUND(with the collaboration of Jean Ginsburger and Jean-Pierre Bernard). 80 pages – 2nd édition Paris, 1999 ( B217 in our Library).

Price : 15 Euros plus postage dues. Details here.

Old Picture of the Lunéville cemetery and a few pictures of gravestones. Map of the cemetery and location of the tombs in the corresponding squares. Index of family names. Map of the now vanished Jewish cemetery of Rosieres-aux-Salines.

One thousands tombs, more than 1200 names, including those of soldiers killed for France, have been recorded. The corresponding deaths were recorded at Luneville, Baccarat, Charmes, Donnelay, Herbeviller, Rosieres-aux-Salines, Vic sur Seille and other villages. Each tomb is identified by the corresponding square, the row and a grave number. The surname and given name(s) of the deceased are listed, as are those of the eventual spouse, the death date and place, the age at death and the existence of an inscription in Hebrew. An alphabetical name index makes it easier to find a tomb.

These data are complemented by those of the vital records and a list of ruined tombs. It is at the same time a work to preserve the memory of the cemetery and a genealogical tool. It allows us to evaluate the successive arrivals of newcomers to Luneville: first the people from Alsace-Lorraine after 1871, then the Eastern European immigrants, mainly after WW1, and finally of the “repatriated” from North Africa after 1962.

 The Jewish cemetery in NANCY

Our members Claude LEVY-LAMBERT and Colette XXX report us:

The graves of this Jewish cemetery, 2 av. de Boufflers, were recorded, indexed and are now available on the website of the Jewish Community in Nancy.

This repertory, last edition July 21, 2005 yields several thousands of graves, listed by alphabetical order of the deceased, with the maiden names for married women, birth and death year and localization in the cemetery.

EUROPA

Several organizations are interested in Jewish cemeteries around the world and particularly in Europe. The most important effort in our opinion is due to IAJGS and his  International Cemetery project.

Cemeteries in particular Austria, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, England included in the inventory of cemeteries JOWBR.

The JOWBR, a Global Register Online Tomb accompanied by a search engine, provides access to data collected on each grave.

Moreover Heritage Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries (HFPJC) has posted a description of the state of 420 cemeteries, some well restored, others degraded.
