YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ON ALSACE
Meetings.There
is a local branch of our Society in Alsace. There is in Paris a specialized

Publications:
the CGJ offers numerous publications concerning Alsace. All details about
these works can be found by clicking on Publications
We especially draw your attention on :
- A general census of the Jews in the province of Alsace
was made in 1784 and has been published by the CGJ.. Its use is made much
easier by the index of the names of this census, due to Dan LEESON
and also published by us.
-A very precious analysis of the Jewish wedding contracts in Alsace
during the XVIIIth century was published in 1997 by A.A. FRAENCKEL
Mémoire Juive en Alsace, Contrats de mariages juifs au XVIIIe
siècle, (éd. du Cédrat, Strasbourg 1997, for information
librairie.cedrat@wanadoo.fr). Its use is made much easier by the index
of the names of this census, due to Rosanne and Dan LEESON and published
by the CGJ.
-In Alsace as in the whole French Empire, Jews had to take family names
in 1808. The registers where the choices of names were recorded in 1808
have been recovered for the majority of them. Concerning Alsace, 113 out
of 124 registers in Bas-Rhin and 34 out of 57 registers of Haut-Rhin are
known. All these registers have been analyzed by Pierre KATZ and published
by the CGJ. The indexes of both works can be found by clicking on basrhin1808
and hautrhin1808.
- Moreover, Pierre KATZ has analyzed the 1851 census for Bas-Rhin and
Haut-Rhin. His work is published by the CGJ under the titles Les
Communautés Juives du Bas-Rhin en 1851 and Les
Communautés Juives du Haut-Rhin en 1851. The indexes of both
works can be found by clicking on basrhin1851
and hautrhin1851.
Other more specialized worked have also been published by the CGJ:
-
Registre du cimetière israélite de Rosenwiller (1753-1980)
Translated in French and introduction
by Avraham Malthête
This long awaited
book concerns the largest Jewish Cemetery
in Alsace which has been in use since the middle of the
XVIIth century. 5588 burials are registered from one hundred
neighbouring villages and cities.
-The
memories of Ascher Lévy have just been translated in French.
