BORDEAUX-BAYONNE

From the end of the 17th century and beginning of the 18th many Marranos left Spain and Portugal and have arrived in Bordeaux, Bayonne and also Toulouse and Marseille.

Among the documents to consult are:

The Dictionnaire des Juifs Bordelais  of Jean CAVIGNAC (Cote L018) , and the book of the same author, Les Israélites bordelais de 1780 à 1850, Publisud, 1991 (Cote L087).  Unfortunately, the author did not have time before his death to correct the  numerous errors in his Dictionnaire. Great care should be taken in using it.

The 1808 declarations of the family names chosen in Bordeaux are available.  This register has been microfilmed, and the microfilm can be viewed at our Library (Cote M009), as well as the declarations for Bayonne-Saint-Esprit, Peyrehorade and Toulouse. But you can also find the whole registers of Bordeaux, Bayonne-Saint-Esprit, and Peyrehorade online in the Members' Corner (click on Prises de noms de 1808).

We also call your attention to the recent book of Jacques BLAMONT, Le Lion et le Moucheron, Histoire des Marranes de Toulouse, ed. Odile Jacob, 2000, which contains a certain number of genealogical trees relating to the 17th century.

For the moment there is no special group for this region, but many of our members have definite ideas on the subject
