ALSACE

There were very many Jewish communities in Alsace (Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin)     even before the 18th century.

  •  There was a general census of the Jews in the province of Alsace (Dénombrement des Juifs d'Alsace)  taken in 1784 (click on Publications).  Its use has been greatly facilitated by an Index of names created by Dan LEESON (click on Publications).

  •  A very precious study of the Jewish marriage contracts deposited with the Notaries in Alsace during the XVIIIth century was published in 1997 by A.A. Fraenckel (Mémoires Juives en Alsace, Contrats de mariages juifs au XVIIIe siècle, Ed. du Cédrat, Strasbourg, 1997, Ref. L121 in our Library)(Information at librairie.cedrat@wanadoo.fr ) . Its use has been greatly facilitated by an Index created by Rosanne and Dan LEESON (click on Publications).

  • The registers of the choice of family names of 1808.

For Alsace, 113 out of 124 original registers of Bas-Rhin and 34 out of 57 registers of Haut-Rhin have been found. All these registers have been examined by Pierre KATZ (click on Publications).

In addition, Pierre KATZ has examined the census of 1851 for Bas-Rhin and for Haut-Rhin (click on Publications).

Numerous other documents pertaining to the Alsatian communities are also available in our library (click on Library).

You can also consult the website for Alsatian Judaism, which has a link to Genealogy, with a bulletin board for small-ads:

It might be interesting to know the corresponding French/German names of Alsatian villages. Just click here.

And of course, by joining the Cercle de Généalogie Juive you can benefit from the mutual assistance of other members, and participate in a special interest group for Alsace , led by Francis WEILL, Eliane ROOS-SCHUHL, and Bernard LYON-CAEN (see Meetings).
