Lecture by Hervé LE BRET

The d'Eichtal family

The d'Eichthal brothers, Gustave (1804-1886) and Adolphe (1805-1895), the first one a saint-simonian thinker, the other one a businessman, manager of the Pereire group, are not well known although they broke new roads to the French society of the 19th century. Grandsons of a German Court Jew and grand-nephews of Berr Isaac Berr, they convert to christianism in 1817, but are still faithful to their Jewish origins: Gustave claims them in his saint-simonian publications and Adolphe in his social networks. Hervé Le Bret, descendant of Gustave and Cécile Rodrigues-Henriquès, made use of unpublished family sources to write a Ph.D. dissertation he defended in december 2007 at Paris IV Sorbonne
